| Description de l’avers | The obverse presents a dynamic, modernist composition commemorating the 800th birth anniversary of the Sufi mystic and poet Mevlana (Rumi). At centre, the Turkish crescent and star emblem is flanked by a stylised whirling dervish sema motif and a UNESCO logo at the bottom, alluding to UNESCO's designation of 2007 as the Year of Mevlana. Decorative tulip and hand motifs are scattered around the field, evoking Ottoman artistic tradition. The cursive tourism logo 'Türkiye' appears in the upper field. This piece was issued to mark the 800th anniversary of the birth of Jalāl ad-Dīn Rūmī, the 13th-century Sufi poet and mystic born in Balkh — present-day Afghanistan — who spent much of his adult life in Konya, where his shrine remains one of Turkey's most visited sites. The Turkish state's relationship with Rūmī is complicated: the Mevlevi Order he founded was suppressed by Atatürk's government in 1925 under the Law on the Closure of Dervish Lodges, yet the same state now actively promotes his image for cultural tourism and commemorative coinage alike.
The "Yeni Lira" designation places this squarely in the 2005–2008 transitional currency period, before Turkey dropped the "Yeni" prefix in January 2009.
