| Opis rewersu | A displayed double-headed eagle occupies the central field, its wings spread and talons clasping olive branches below. On the eagle's breast is superimposed the quartered shield of the Order of Malta, bearing the characteristic white eight-pointed cross on a black field combined with the arms of the Grand Master. A royal crown surmounts the shield and the eagle's heads. The divided date 17-98 flanks the crown at the top of the field, with the denomination T·30 inscribed centrally between the date elements. The encircling Latin legend HOSPITAL·ET S·SEP·HIER· runs along the beaded border, referencing the full title of the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. |

Ferdinand von Hompesch zu Bolheim holds the distinction of being the last Grand Master to actually rule Malta, surrendering the island to Napoleon in June 1798 without serious resistance — a capitulation so swift and inglorious that he was subsequently stripped of the Grand Mastership by the Order's own chapter. This coin was struck in the final months before that surrender, making it among the last issues of a sovereign Order that had held Malta since 1530.
The .1 variety designation in KM#345 distinguishes this from a second die pairing produced in the same year. Hompesch's total reign lasted under two years.
