Emmanuel de Rohan-Pölzl was elected Grand Master in 1775 and proved one of the most administratively capable rulers the Order had seen in generations — he codified Maltese civil law in 1784 and maintained a functioning navy long after the Order's military relevance had faded. The 30 Tarì was the Order's principal large silver denomination, a heavy coin issued more for prestige and international trade settlement than for everyday commerce on the island.
By 1777 the Order's sovereignty over Malta was increasingly nominal; the Knights depended heavily on French support, which would evaporate entirely when Napoleon seized the island in 1798 without meaningful resistance.
