Issued under the Constitutional Monarchy, this piece was France's first attempt at a reformed silver coinage following the upheaval of 1789. The "FRANÇAIS" titulature — truncated on earlier dies to "FRANÇOIS" — reflects the transitional orthography of the period, and the two spellings appear interchangeably across the short run. Production spanned multiple mints simultaneously as the revolutionary government struggled to maintain a functioning monetary system, yet the series was abandoned by 1793 as the Republic moved to strip all remaining royal imagery from circulation entirely.
