Additional information

Issued to commemorate Pope Paul VI's visit to Uganda in July 1969 — the first papal visit to Africa in history. The trip was a deliberate gesture toward the newly independent nations of the continent, culminating in Paul VI's canonization of the twenty-two Ugandan Martyrs at a ceremony in Kampala. Uganda's mint capacity at the time was essentially nonexistent, and these pieces were struck abroad to fulfill the commemorative mandate of the newly established central bank.
