| Obverse description | Central field bears the Portuguese royal coat of arms, depicting a quartered shield with the traditional castles and quinas (five blue escutcheons arranged in a cross), surmounted by a mural crown. Scrollwork or mantling flanks the shield on either side, and small stars appear in the lower quarters of the field. The design is struck in low relief with the bold, somewhat crude execution characteristic of colonial hammered coinage from the Goa Mint. |
