Francis Maria II della Rovere ruled Urbino for five decades but abdicated in 1621 in favor of his son Federigo Ubaldo, only to outlive him — Federigo Ubaldo died in 1623, leaving no male heir. Francis Maria resumed rule as a broken man and ultimately ceded Urbino to the Papal States upon his own death in 1631, ending over a century of della Rovere governance. The duchy's small-denomination silver issues from this long reign reflect a mint operating under the perpetual fiscal strain of a minor state caught between larger powers.
