Alte Diele was a well-known restaurant and tavern on the Reeperbahn in Hamburg's St. Pauli district. This 30 Pfennig piece is classic Kleingeldersatz — small-change substitute scrip issued privately during the acute coin shortage that gripped Germany in 1921 as postwar inflation began eroding the value of metal coinage faster than the mint could replace it. Thousands of German businesses, municipalities, and institutions issued their own Notgeld in this period; the Hamburg tavern trade was no exception.
At 62 × 43 mm, this is among the smaller pieces in the Notgeld spectrum — practical for a till, not decorative like the larger Serienscheine issued for collectors.
