Alte Diele was a well-known inn and restaurant in Hamburg's St. Pauli district, and like thousands of German businesses during the 1921 Kleingeldnot — the small-change shortage that followed postwar currency dislocation — it issued its own Notgeld to keep daily transactions moving. These hyperlocal pieces circulated as functional scrip within a very tight geographic radius, redeemable only at the issuing establishment, which means survival rates depend almost entirely on whether customers bothered to return them at all.
