Langeneß-Nordmarsch is a Hallig — one of the tiny, storm-battered marsh islands off the North Frisian coast of Schleswig-Holstein, with a population that rarely exceeded a few hundred souls. That a community this small issued its own emergency currency in 1921 is less surprising than it sounds: the postwar Notgeld phenomenon swept through thousands of German municipalities, and remote island communities faced acute small-change shortages just as acutely as industrial cities.
The two-signature authorization by Bernsen and Andresen reflects the Gemeinde's own administrative apparatus signing off directly — no bank intermediary.
