Friedrichroda, a small spa town in the Thuringian Forest, began issuing Notgeld in 1917 as the wartime coin shortage stripped even minor-denomination pfennig pieces from everyday transactions. This 30 Pfennig note belongs to the first wave of municipal emergency issues — printed before the later 1920–1922 period when Notgeld became a semi-deliberate collector phenomenon. Notes from this earlier phase were actually used, which means surviving examples in clean condition are meaningfully less common than the decorative series that followed.
