Issued to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Rafael Trujillo's seizure of power, this coin was struck while Trujillo ran one of the most absolute dictatorships in the Western Hemisphere. The denomination itself — 30 pesos — was chosen to mirror his 30 years of rule, a numerical vanity that placed the dictator's self-mythology directly into the monetary system. Only 3,522 pieces were struck, almost entirely for presentation and export rather than domestic circulation.
Trujillo was assassinated in May 1961, just six years after this issue.
