Additional information

Cuba's hard-currency commemorative program of the late 1980s and early 1990s was explicitly designed to generate foreign exchange at a moment when the collapse of Soviet subsidies was hollowing out the island's economy. These large-format silver pieces were never intended for domestic circulation and were sold almost entirely to European and Latin American collectors through state export channels.

Philip II, the Spanish king commemorated here, was the monarch under whose authority Cuba became a formal staging post for the Manila Galleon trade — Havana's harbor serving as the assembly point for treasure fleets returning from the Americas.
