Reverse description A portrait effigy of King Philip II of Spain (Philip of Castile and the Low Countries) is depicted within a laurel wreath at the center of the field. A curved legend in the upper half reads V CENTENARIO flanked by stars, commemorating the 500th anniversary of Columbus's 1492 voyage. Below the effigy, a curved inscription identifies the subject as PHILLIPVS, with the regnal designation HISP REX and the historical date 1492 appearing beneath. The issue year 1992 and a mintmark appear to the right of the central image, and a rope or beaded border runs close to the rim.
