Hatuey was a Taíno chieftain who fled Hispaniola for Cuba around 1511 to warn the indigenous population of the Spanish advance, and was burned at the stake by order of Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar after refusing baptism — reportedly telling a priest that he preferred not to share heaven with Christians. Cuba adopted him as a national hero and proto-revolutionary figure, a framing the Castro government leaned on heavily. This 1991 issue arrived as the Soviet subsidy collapse was already gutting the Cuban economy, making hard-currency commemoratives an increasingly vital foreign exchange mechanism for the state.
