Ernest of Bavaria held the see of Liège from 1581 until his death in 1612, simultaneously occupying the archbishopric of Cologne and several other ecclesiastical offices — a concentration of Wittelsbach territorial ambition thinly disguised as pastoral appointment. His minting activity at Liège was largely driven by the chronic shortage of large-denomination silver in the southern Low Countries during the opening decades of the Eighty Years' War.

The 30 patards denomination, equivalent to two testons, was among the final issues struck under his authority before his death in February 1612.
