The central panel is dominated by a large ornate numeral "30" rendered in three-dimensional relief, flanked at right by an elaborate guilloche rosette bearing the numeral "30" and at left by a circular medallion enclosing the decree text. The Banco dos Estados Unidos do Brazil was one of several private banks granted sweeping note-issuing privileges under the Encilhamento — the speculative monetary boom that followed Brazil's transition from Empire to Republic in 1889. The policy, championed by Finance Minister Rui Barbosa, flooded the economy with paper currency and helped fuel one of Latin America's earliest stock market crashes. This bank, despite its grandiose name suggesting a federal institution, was a private commercial venture.
The American Bank Note Company handled a substantial portion of Brazil's private bank printing during this period. P#S607 belongs to the first print run, distinguished in the catalog from later impressions by subtle typographic differences in the charter text.
