The Banco da República do Brasil was itself a product of political improvisation — formed in 1892 from the forced merger of the Banco do Brasil and the Banco da República dos Estados Unidos do Brasil, it inherited a chaotic monetary situation left by the Encilhamento, the speculative boom-and-bust that followed the early Republic's reckless credit expansion. This 30 mil réis denomination is an unusual one, sitting outside the round-figure logic that typically governs currency design, and suggests it was calibrated to meet a specific transactional need in the post-Encilhamento stabilization effort.
Giesecke & Devrient in Leipzig were the engravers and printers throughout this series.
