The Credito Agricolo Industriale Sardo was one of several regional credit institutions established in the post-unification period to channel capital into the agricultural and industrial development of Sardinia — an island the new Italian state largely treated as a fiscal problem rather than an investment opportunity. The 30-lire denomination is unusual; most Italian minor issuers worked in rounder values, and the figure suggests this note was calibrated to a specific local credit or payroll function rather than general retail circulation.
Bradbury Wilkinson's involvement places the printing firmly in London, a common arrangement for Italian regional and semi-public institutions that lacked access to quality intaglio facilities domestically in the early 1870s.
