30 Kreuzers - Maximilian II Emanuel

Maximilian II Emanuel was physically absent from Bavaria for much of the 1690s, serving as Governor-General of the Spanish Netherlands from 1692 onward — the very year this piece was struck. The electorate's coinage continued under delegated authority, and issues from this stretch of his reign reflect an administration run largely by ministers in Munich while their elector pursued military and dynastic ambitions abroad.

His later gamble on the French side during the War of the Spanish Succession would cost him dearly: Bavaria was occupied by Habsburg forces after 1704, and Maximilian spent nearly a decade in exile. Coins from the pre-occupation years like this one predate that rupture entirely.
