St. Gallen occupied an awkward political position in the 18th century — a free imperial city technically subordinate to the Holy Roman Empire, yet perpetually in tension with the surrounding Abbey of St. Gallen, whose abbot held rival territorial authority over much of the same region. The city's independent coinage was one of the more pointed assertions of that autonomy. By 1738, the 30 Kreuzer denomination was already falling out of favor across the Swiss and South German monetary zones, making late issues like this one shorter-lived in circulation than earlier strikes of the same type.
HMZ 2-904 identifies only a handful of die marriages for this year.
