One of hundreds of Austrian municipal Notgeld issues printed during the acute coin shortage of the First World War and its aftermath, this 30 Heller piece was authorized by the tiny Lower Austrian commune of Weinzierl bei Perg rather than any banking authority. Three local signatories — the mayor, his deputy, and a single councillor — gave it whatever legitimacy it carried. Jos. Feichtingers Erben of Linz handled enormous volumes of these small-denomination emergency issues for Upper and Lower Austrian municipalities, making them the workaday printers of a monetary crisis neither they nor their clients had anticipated.
