Austrian Notgeld of the post-WWI period, issued by a municipal authority in the Weinviertel wine-growing region of Lower Austria during the acute coin shortage that followed the collapse of the Habsburg economy. These small-denomination emergency issues — heller notes in particular — were authorized locally and signed by a community official, here one Josef Schober, giving each note a quasi-personal authority entirely unlike standard central bank paper.
Weinviertel Notgeld of this denomination circulated alongside dozens of nearly identical issues from neighboring parishes, creating a chaotic but functional patchwork of hyperlocal currency that remained valid only within its issuing community.
