Modewarenhaus Alois Roth was a fashion goods retailer in St. Pölten, Lower Austria, issuing this 30 Heller note during the acute small-change famine that gripped Austria in the early postwar years. The collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left municipal authorities and private businesses alike scrambling to plug the gap — notgeld of this kind was a commercial necessity, not a novelty. A watermarked paper substrate on a private retailer's emergency note is unusual; most comparable Austrian trade notgeld of 1920 used plain unprotected stock.
