St. Johann in Tirol was among hundreds of Austrian municipalities forced to print their own small-denomination emergency money after the First World War left the national currency system unable to supply adequate coin. These Notgeld issues filled a genuine gap — metal coinage had largely vanished from circulation, hoarded or consumed by wartime metal demands, and the Austrian state was in no position to remedy this quickly. Wagner in Innsbruck handled the printing for numerous Tyrolean communes during this period, which gives the series a regional coherence rarely found in German Notgeld of the same years.
Josef Hofinger's signature as Bürgermeister ties the note to a specific moment of local administrative responsibility — small-town officials suddenly accountable for monetary instruments.
