Issued by the district branch of the national association representing war-wounded soldiers, widows, and orphans, this 30 Heller note is a piece of Austrian postwar emergency currency — Notgeld — produced specifically to address the acute small-denomination coin shortage that plagued Austria in the years immediately following 1918. The Rohrbach district office was among dozens of regional welfare bodies that assumed quasi-monetary functions simply because no one else would. Designer Luise Derschmidt and engraver Bernh. Draschmidt handled the artistic execution, with printing carried out locally by Jos. Feichtingers Erben in Linz.
