One of thousands of Austrian Notgeld issues printed between 1919 and 1922, when the postwar collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left municipalities scrambling to cover a chronic shortage of small-denomination coin. Obernberg am Brenner sits at altitude in the Wipp Valley, a handful of kilometers from the Austrian-Italian border established by the 1919 Treaty of Saint-Germain — a border that cut directly through the Brenner Pass and severed communities with long economic ties to what was now South Tyrol.
The Jaksch/Pick reference suffix "Ic" indicates a third color or paper variant within the 30 Heller denomination run, suggesting the municipality issued multiple print runs as demand persisted.
