Oberalm is a small village in Salzburg province, and its decision to issue emergency money in 1920 places this squarely within the Austrian Notgeld phenomenon — a consequence of the severe coin shortage that followed the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy and the economic disruption of the immediate postwar years.
