Loich is a tiny rural commune in Lower Austria's Pielach Valley — the kind of municipality that would never have issued its own paper money under normal circumstances. This note exists because of the acute small-change shortage that gripped Austria during and after the First World War, forcing hundreds of parishes, towns, and market communes to print their own Notgeld to keep local trade moving. The Gemeinderat authorized these emissions reluctantly and usually in limited runs.
Jos. v. Schönbrunner as designer is a notable credit for so modest an issue. The printing was handled by Radinger in Mariazell, the nearest town of any commercial consequence to Loich — a logical choice given the geography.
