30 Gulden

De Javasche Bank's relationship with American Bank Note Company was an expedient born of wartime. Before 1914, Dutch colonial currency was largely the province of European printers — Enschedé in Haarlem chief among them — but the disruption of transatlantic shipping during World War One pushed the bank toward New York for several issues in this period. The 30 Gulden denomination itself was an unusual face value, neither a round number nor a standard step in the colonial gulden series, and it appeared only briefly before being superseded.

ABNC's intaglio work on this series is technically accomplished, as one would expect, but the denomination had limited commercial utility in Dutch East Indies trade and likely saw restricted everyday circulation.
