This issue marks the 75th birthday of Juan Carlos I, though by 2013 the timing carried an awkward charge — the king had fractured his hip on an elephant hunting trip in Botswana just months earlier, a trip paid for by a businessman under active corruption investigation. The public backlash was severe enough that Juan Carlos issued a rare public apology, the first of his reign. He abdicated the following year.
