Slovenia declared independence from Yugoslavia on June 25, 1991, but the Ten-Day War that immediately followed meant the anniversary being commemorated here was anything but ceremonious in its origins. The Brioni Declaration, brokered by European Community mediators, secured Yugoslav federal army withdrawal and gave the declaration real teeth — without it, the date itself would mean considerably less.
