Bettancourt-la-Ferrée is a small commune in the Haute-Marne department, and this piece belongs to the wave of locally-issued écu denominations that proliferated across French municipalities in the early-to-mid 1990s. The movement capitalized on Article 12 of the 1992 Maastricht Treaty negotiations, during which French regional identity politics briefly made local currency-adjacent tokens both commercially viable and politically resonant. S.L.O. Collections was among several private firms that contracted with communes to produce these issues, handling distribution and striking arrangements while the municipality lent its name and nominal authority.
