Obverse description The full achievement of the national arms of Antigua and Barbuda occupies the centre of the field, featuring a quartered shield bearing a golden sun rising over the sea above a colonial-era sugar mill, supported by two deer rampant flanking a central pineapple-topped crest, and a scroll below inscribed EACH ENDEAVOURING ALL ACHIEVING. The circumferential legend ANTIGUA & BARBUDA INDEPENDENCE NOVEMBER 1981 runs around the upper periphery, while the date 1982 and the denomination 30 DOLLARS appear in the lower field beneath the arms.

Reverse description George Washington, depicted in full military uniform with epaulettes and sword, stands facing slightly left in the centre of the field, holding the reins of a horse that bows its head to the left beside him. A sparse landscape with low scrub vegetation is rendered in the exergual area. The circumferential legend 1732 GEORGE WASHINGTON 1982 arcs around the upper border, while VERPLANCK'S POINT 1790 is inscribed along the lower periphery, commemorating Washington's visit to Verplanck's Point, New York, in 1790.

Additional information

Verplanck's Point was the site of a 1780 skirmish during the American Revolutionary War — not 1790, which raises an immediate question about the date rendered on this coin. The issue is one of several Caribbean silver commemoratives flooding the early 1980s market, produced largely for collector export rather than domestic circulation. Antigua and Barbuda had achieved independence only in November 1981, making 1982 among the first years the federation issued coinage under its own authority.
