Captain Cook's third Pacific voyage — the one that killed him — departed Britain in 1776 aboard the Resolution, a converted Whitby collier that Cook had also commanded on his second voyage. He never completed the journey. In February 1779, a dispute over a stolen cutter at Kealakekua Bay, Hawaii ended with Cook dead on the beach, stabbed and clubbed by islanders he had initially met peacefully.
The Royal Canadian Mint's gold-on-silver collector issues of this size have been a consistent vehicle for Pacific exploration subjects since the early 2000s, with the 62.69g planchet format reserved for premium annual releases outside the standard bullion program.
