The kilogram Kookaburra series, launched by the Perth Mint in 1990, was among the first government-issued silver bullion coins in that weight class anywhere in the world. Each year's issue carries a new kookaburra design, a deliberate policy that drives collector demand well beyond the bullion floor and keeps earlier dates liquid on the secondary market. The 2001–2002 issues mark the transition between Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth portrait of Elizabeth II becoming fully embedded across Australian coinage.
