The one-kilogram Australian Koala silver bullion series launched in 2008, with the Perth Mint positioning it directly against established kilo coins from the Royal Canadian Mint and Austrian Mint. Each year carries a different reverse design — a deliberate departure from the fixed-design approach of the Kookaburra kilo series, which the Perth Mint had been producing since 1990. Annual design changes were a calculated move to drive collector demand on top of bullion demand, effectively creating two separate buyer markets for a single product.
KM# 1100 is the inaugural year of the Koala kilo denomination, making 2008 examples the first-issue entry point for type collectors.
