Tuvalu has no indigenous gold mining tradition and no independent monetary system of consequence — its coinage is struck under contract by the Perth Mint and functions almost entirely as a bullion and collector vehicle. The Lunar series issued under the Australian territorial relationship allows Tuvalu to attach its name to Perth's production runs, a convenient arrangement that gives legal-tender status to what is essentially a premium bullion product.
