Additional information

Robert Bateman, now in his nineties, built his reputation painting North American wildlife with a naturalist's eye rather than a romantic one — his work hangs in the National Gallery of Canada and was exhibited at the Smithsonian. The Royal Canadian Mint has issued several Bateman collaborations over the past decade, consistently targeting the wildlife art collector crossover market rather than the traditional numismatic one.

The mustang population in North America descends largely from horses that escaped or were released from Spanish colonial stock beginning in the sixteenth century — feral, not native, despite the iconography.
