The reverse presents a highly detailed sculptural adaptation of Tom Thomson's celebrated 1916–1917 painting 'The Jack Pine', rendered entirely in fine silver relief. A solitary, windswept jack pine dominates the centre of the composition, its snow-laden branches drooping dramatically under the weight of winter ice and frost. Rocky shoreline outcroppings occupy the lower foreground, while distant hills and a frozen lakescape recede into the background, faithfully capturing Thomson's iconic vision of the Canadian wilderness. The engraving employs varied surface textures to convey the contrasting elements of bark, snow, ice, rock, and open water. No legends or inscriptions appear on the reverse field. |
Tom Thomson's Jack Pine was painted in 1916–17, roughly a year before his death by drowning in Algonquin Park under circumstances that remain disputed. The Royal Canadian Mint has returned to Thomson's work repeatedly over the decades, making this one of the more revisited sources in Canadian numismatic art programs.
