During the Spanish Civil War, the breakdown of small-denomination coinage drove hundreds of Catalan municipalities and local trade guilds to print their own emergency fractional currency. The Gremi de Cafès i Bars — the café and bar guild of Figueres — was among the more specific issuers: not a municipal council or workers' cooperative, but a single sectoral trade association issuing scrip redeemable within its own member establishments.
Figueres, as the capital of the Alt Empordà comarca and a Republican stronghold close to the French border, remained under Republican control until early February 1939. Guild-issued notes like this one circulated alongside official Republican emisiones, tolerated out of necessity rather than any formal monetary authority.
