Alcorisa is a small agricultural town in Teruel province, Aragon — precisely the kind of municipality that found itself issuing emergency paper during the summer of 1936 when the peseta supply collapsed at the local level following the Nationalist uprising. These town-issued fractional notes, known collectively as "papel moneda local," were a purely pragmatic response to the hoarding of coins; hundreds of Spanish municipalities did the same thing within weeks of the outbreak of civil war.
