Issued to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Korea, this coin reflects the sexagennial cycle deeply embedded in the Korean calendar tradition — the completion of one full hwan'gap, carrying considerable cultural weight in Korean society. The Bank of Korea released it as a commemorative rather than a circulating issue, which is why surviving examples are almost universally found in original packaging.
The 30,000 won denomination was chosen to correspond directly with the anniversary year of 1948, a deliberate numeric symbolism rather than any functional monetary unit.
