Mudeungsan, near Gwangju in South Jeolla Province, was designated South Korea's 21st national park in 2013 — a relatively recent elevation that directly prompted this commemorative issue as part of the Bank of Korea's ongoing national parks series. The mountain is geologically unusual for its columnar jointing, great hexagonal stone pillars formed by slow Cretaceous-era volcanic cooling that dominate the upper ridgeline.
