Gewerkschaft König Ludwig was a coal-mining cooperative (Gewerkschaft in the German mining sense, not a trade union) operating the König Ludwig colliery in Recklinghausen-Süd in the Ruhr. During the hyperinflation peak of 1923, hundreds of German industrial firms, municipalities, and cooperatives issued their own emergency currency — Notgeld — because the Reichsbank simply could not print and distribute legal tender fast enough to keep pace with collapsing purchasing power. A 30-million Mark denomination places this note firmly in the late-summer to autumn 1923 window, when values were escalating by the day.
Mining operations in the Ruhr faced particular disruption that year from the Franco-Belgian occupation, which began in January 1923. Many collieries in the region issued scrip partly to pay workers when conventional currency was unavailable, unreliable, or simply insufficient in volume.
