| Obverse description | The central field carries a pink guilloche underprint over which the denomination "30 Millionen Mark" is printed in large script lettering within a dotted oval cartouche. Above, the text "Guttschein über" introduces the value, with series designation "Serie G" and a handwritten serial number at upper right. Flanking the central vignette on both vertical margins are rectangular panels bearing the denomination "30 Millionen Mark 30" in rotated text. The lower portion contains the issuing clause in cursive script, the date "8. Gewerkschaft König Ludwig was a coal-mining cooperative (Gewerkschaft in the German mining sense, not a trade union) operating the König Ludwig colliery in Recklinghausen-Süd in the Ruhr. During the hyperinflation peak of 1923, hundreds of German industrial firms, municipalities, and cooperatives issued their own emergency currency — Notgeld — because the Reichsbank simply could not print and distribute legal tender fast enough to keep pace with collapsing purchasing power. A 30-million Mark denomination places this note firmly in the late-summer to autumn 1923 window, when values were escalating by the day.
Mining operations in the Ruhr faced particular disruption that year from the Franco-Belgian occupation, which began in January 1923. Many collieries in the region issued scrip partly to pay workers when conventional currency was unavailable, unreliable, or simply insufficient in volume.
