In the upper field, the arc legend 世界最早的铜铸币 公元前16世纪 ('World's earliest cast copper coins, 16th century BC') frames a display of ancient monetary forms, including a cowrie shell, a bi-disc coin, a spade coin (bu), and a knife coin (dao) bearing inscribed characters. The lower field depicts multiple figures engaged in the casting process — stoking a furnace, working with moulds, and sorting finished coins — all rendered in a detailed narrative vignette evocative of traditional Chinese illustration. The denomination 3元 appears to the right in the field. |

This issue is part of a short-lived series the People's Bank of China produced in the early 1990s celebrating ancient Chinese cash coins — a deliberate nod to over two millennia of domestic monetary tradition at a moment when China was aggressively expanding its bullion program for international collectors. The 3 Yuan denomination itself was unusual, sitting outside both the domestic circulation system and the round figures preferred by most bullion markets, which kept mintages modest and collector interest narrowly focused.
