The Chinese Panda series launched in 1982 as part of a deliberate strategy by the People's Bank of China to compete in the international bullion and collector market — a direct response to the success of the Krugerrand and the American Eagles that would follow. The 3 Yuan denomination is anomalous within the series, created specifically for this commemorative issue rather than drawn from the standard bullion lineup.
The 25th anniversary edition reused the iconic 1982 reverse design rather than the annually changing image that defines the regular series.
