| 表面の説明 | Crowned Portuguese royal arms at center, featuring the quartered shield with castles and bezants, set within an ornate heraldic cartouche. Two quatrefoil rosettes flank the shield symmetrically in the field. The encircling Latin legend reads MARIA.I.E.PETRUS.III.D.G.P.E.AL.REGES, identifying the joint monarchs Maria I and Pedro III as sovereigns of Portugal and the Algarves. The coin is struck with a milled border of fine beads running along the periphery. The overall design is crisp and deeply struck in high-grade silver. |

Maria I and Pedro III ruled jointly from 1777 until Pedro's death in 1786, making this the only Portuguese coinage to bear both their effigies simultaneously. Pedro III was Maria's uncle — she had married him in 1760 under direct pressure from her father, José I, partly to neutralize a potential rival claim. The joint reign lasted just under a decade, and coinage issued under it carries a terminal date fixed not by reform or recoinage but by a death.
The vintém denomination, nominally worth 20 réis, had roots stretching back to the fifteenth century — the name itself derives from vinte, twenty.
