Obverse description The obverse displays the Portuguese royal coat of arms, consisting of a shield quartered with the traditional quinas (five escutcheons arranged in a cross, each bearing five bezants) and a border of castles, all surmounted by a royal crown. Two quatrefoil ornaments flank the shield on either side in the field. The circular legend reads MARIA.I.D.G.PORT.ET.ALG.REGINA, identifying the queen as Maria I, by the grace of God, Queen of Portugal and the Algarves. The design is executed in high relief against a plain field, with a finely milled border encircling the entire composition.
